About Abiodun Oyewole
Abiodun Oyewole is a renowned poet, author, and a founding member of the influential group The Last Poets, credited with laying the foundation for hip-hop music. Born Charles Davis in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Queens, New York, Oyewole cultivated his passion for poetry through influences like jazz, gospel, and iconic poets such as Langston Hughes. His career began in earnest with The Last Poets, whose politically charged spoken-word performances resonated deeply within the African American community.
Throughout his extensive career, Oyewole has published multiple collections, including “Branches of the Tree of Life," and edited significant works like "Black Lives Have Always Mattered,” which confronts issues of racism and privilege. His musical endeavors include several spoken word albums and collaborative works, illustrating his commitment to addressing social issues through art.
In addition to his creative output, Oyewole runs “Sundays @ 110,” a long-standing initiative that fosters community among artists. He continues to inspire through teaching, workshops, and poetry performances worldwide.
