About Abou Elela
The Abou Elela Lab is a research laboratory based at 3201 rue Jean-Mignault in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and affiliated with the Université de Sherbrooke. Its long-term goal is to build a detailed molecular understanding of RNA metabolism and its contribution to cancer biology. The lab investigates RNA as a dynamic, multifunctional molecule whose activity can influence genome structure and function, rather than simply serving as a messenger or scaffold.
Its research focuses on the mechanisms that regulate RNA maturation, stability, and function, and on how these processes shape cellular responses to environmental changes and affect ribosome activity. Specific areas of study include selective RNA degradation, RNA splicing, ribosome biogenesis, small nucleolar RNAs in ovarian cancer, intron function, and ribosome heterogeneity. By examining how RNA synthesis and stability influence selective protein translation, the team aims to clarify processes relevant to tumor progression and cellular adaptation to stress.
The lab shares its publications and team information and provides opportunities through its recruitment section.
