About Abstractopedia
The Encyclopedia of Abstractions, also known as Abstractopedia, is an experimental reference project that maps recurring patterns across fields of knowledge and the interventions used to address them. Its catalogs distinguish between abstractions that describe situations and those that guide action. The resource includes 1,523 prime abstractions, 10,828 domain-specific abstractions, 1,134 solution archetypes and 9,939 mechanisms. These are connected by a typed hierarchy of 12,609 relationships and supported by a registry of 32,579 cited works.
Visitors can explore entries, conceptual essays, applications, domains and interactive maps, or use a learnability curriculum and the Abstractopia practice app. For researchers and developers, the project provides downloadable catalogs and data graphs, while a local MCP server enables offline querying without an account or network connection after installation. The site is intended for curious readers, educators, researchers and people building with AI. It is explicitly a living, AI-assisted synthesis rather than a settled or peer-reviewed canon; its entries, counts and methods remain under revision, and some citations have not yet been fully verified.
