About Abuse in Care
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in Care is an independent inquiry in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. Their main focus is to investigate and gather information about historical abuse that occurred in state care and under the care of faith-based institutions between the years 1950-1999. However, survivor experiences both before and after these dates may also be considered.
The Commission's work involves setting the Terms of Reference, gathering evidence, and listening to survivor stories. Through this process, they aim to make recommendations to the Governor General in 2024 on how New Zealand can improve the care and support provided to children, young people, and vulnerable adults. With a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Commission recognizes the over-representation of Māori and Pacific communities in state and faith-based care due to colonization and systemic racism.
They have appointed a Survivor Advisory Group of Experts to represent survivors and ensure their voices are heard. The Royal Commission is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for survivors to share their experiences and seek justice
