,האקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים היא הגוף הבכיר בקהילה המדעית בישראל. היא נוסדה על פי חוק בשנת תשכ”א (1961) במטרה לרכז בתוכה מטובי אישי המדע תושבי ישראל, לטפח ולקדם פעילות מדעית, לייעץ לממשלה בענייני מחקר ותכנון מדעי בעלי חשיבות לאומית, לקיים מגע עם גופים מקבילים בחוץ-לארץ, לייצג את המדע הישראלי במוסדות ובכינוסים בין-לאומיים ולפרסם כתבים שיש בהם כדי לקדם את המדע. האקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים רואה בקידומה ובפיתוחה של מערכת המחקר המדעי הבסיסי יעד בעל חשיבות לאומית.
