Achiet-le-Grand during WW1 is a historical and commemorative website devoted to the French village of Achiet-le-Grand during the First World War. It preserves the memory of the soldiers and residents affected by the conflict, with particular attention to the men involved in the village’s liberation from 1917 to 1918. The site explains how Achiet-le-Grand railway station became an important logistical hub for German forces from 1914, supporting the movement of supplies and the evacuation of wounded soldiers, before serving as a strategic asset for British forces.
It also recounts the village’s evacuation in 1916, its destruction during the war, and residents’ eventual return to temporary housing. Organized around key periods, including the occupation, events of 1916, the first liberation in 1917, and the end of the occupation in 1918, the website offers historical accounts, period photographs, a gallery, and further resources. It provides an accessible way to explore the village’s wartime experience and honor its enduring legacy, including its recognition with the Croix de Guerre
