Aegis Historical Combat Training is a historical martial arts and fencing program focused on collaborative practice, personal development, and competitive excellence. Based in the Austin, Texas area, Aegis offers weekly study groups where students examine historical sources and apply their lessons to practical fencing scenarios. Training includes disciplines such as longsword, messer, sword and buckler, single-stick, sidesword, and partisan and rotella.
The program’s head instructor has competed in Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2015, earning medals in longsword, messer, and single-stick and twice ranking among the world’s top 100 sword and buckler fencers. Aegis emphasizes helping each student develop their own abilities and insights, rather than focusing only on a few accomplished competitors. Classes take place at a spacious, secluded practice area at Devine Lake Park, with additional study sessions listed in Leander. Students can also arrange private one-on-one or small-group lessons at flexible times and locations. Adult practices are free, while private lessons cost $20 per session. Aegis also hosts tournaments and welcomes inquiries from prospective students.
