About AEPGA
AEPGA, the Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys, is a Portuguese organisation dedicated to the conservation and appreciation of the Miranda Donkey, an indigenous donkey breed. Its work connects animal welfare with the preservation of local heritage and sustainable rural communities. AEPGA provides information and awareness activities on donkey health and wellbeing, and supports breeders and owners of Miranda Donkeys.
Through the Miranda Donkey Valuation Centre and the Donkey Educational and Leisure Activities Centre, the association offers opportunities to learn about and engage with the breed. Visitors can explore centres managed by AEPGA and join walks, while events and educational projects introduce the region’s wildlife, landscapes and traditions. The organisation also promotes the ASINIFIRE initiative, focused on using donkeys in fire prevention and ecological resilience.
Supporters can contribute through a donkey sponsorship campaign or by shopping with AEPGA. Its website shares news, informative resources, project updates and event listings, helping communities and visitors discover the Miranda Donkey and the Planalto Mirandês region
