AeroDelft is a student-led, student-owned team with one mission: to prove and promote liquid hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels in aviation. Through Project Phoenix, we are pioneering hydrogen-powered aircraft by designing, manufacturing, and testing our hydrogen-electric powertrain and retrofitting it into a Sling 4 aircraft. The Full-Scale Phoenix is set to fly on gaseous hydrogen in 2026 and on liquid hydrogen in 2027. By working alongside established industry partners, we combine pioneering research with real-world expertise to advance the future of aviation. By advancing both the technology and the conversation around hydrogen in aviation, we are helping shape a future where clean skies are within reach.

AeroDelft is a student team based in Delft, the Netherlands, working to prove and promote liquid hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to conventional aviation fuels. The teamโs mission is to help advance emission-free aviation, with a particular focus on hydrogen-electric aircraft propulsion. Its work includes designing, building, integrating, and testing aircraft systems, while sharing its research and progress with partners and the wider aviation community.
A central initiative is Project Phoenix, which involves a full-scale, single-seat Sling 4 aircraft. AeroDelft received the aircraft kit in 2021 and began integrating the systems needed for flight. The aircraft has a maximum take-off weight of 920 kilograms and a 10-metre wingspan. The team has reported testing a liquid hydrogen-powered propulsion system in collaboration with TNO at its facility in Ypenburg, following earlier work with gaseous hydrogen.
AeroDelft also offers opportunities for students to join its team and invites organisations to become partners. Partners contribute expertise, experience, materials, and financial resources that support the project and its sustainable aviation goals.
