Ärzteverband Tabakprävention is a German medical association that brings physicians from university hospitals into dialogue with policymakers to advance tobacco prevention. Its central goal is to reduce the number of people in Germany living with chronic illness caused by smoking by encouraging legislative measures. The association highlights the public health consequences of tobacco use and the importance of limiting the tobacco industry’s influence on policy.
The organisation builds on the experience of medical professionals and its youth network, Aufklärung gegen Tabak, a nationwide initiative involving medical students. The network conducts school-based education about smoking and has been represented at 28 medical faculties across Germany. Students who have volunteered in this work can continue contributing as qualified doctors, bringing new ideas to prevention efforts.
A distinctive part of the association’s approach is its local focus. It connects Bundestag members with physicians in the areas served by university hospitals, enabling local doctors to contact their representatives directly.
