The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the Northern Territory (AFANT) is the peak body representing recreational fishers across the NT. Established in 1980, it works to ensure fishers’ views are heard on decisions and proposals affecting recreational fishing, while advocating for the quality and sustainability of the sport. AFANT also promotes responsible fishing and the fair, sustainable use of shared aquatic resources.
The association provides practical information for fishing in the Territory, including guidance on fishing rules, fishing on Aboriginal land, land-based locations, boat ramps and boating safety. Its Land Based Fishing Guide for Darwin and beyond helps newcomers and experienced anglers explore local jetties, platforms, headlands and beaches. AFANT supports research through its fish tagging program, which gathers information on fish stocks, size and age, catches and release rates, and invites volunteers to participate.
Individuals can join to receive updates, have a say on important issues and support the association’s work; businesses can participate through corporate membership or sponsorship.
