About AmericanEqualRights
The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) is a non-profit organization dedicated to achieving full federal marriage equality for all Americans. Since its establishment in 2009, AFER has been at the forefront of the fight for the fundamental right to marry for gay and lesbian Americans. As the sole sponsor of the federal constitutional challenges to California's Proposition 8 and Virginia's discriminatory Marriage Amendment, AFER brought together a bipartisan team of attorneys, Theodore B.
Olson and David Boies, who successfully secured a victory at the United States Supreme Court in 2013, restoring marriage equality to California. AFER's groundbreaking victory at the U. S.
Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 2014 also brought marriage equality to Virginia and set a precedent for the freedom to marry in North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia.
