The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a Government of India institution under the Ministry of Defence, providing medical education and supporting the healthcare needs of the Armed Forces Medical Services. Its academic offerings span undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist training, alongside nursing and paramedical courses. The MBBS programme lasts four and a half years and is followed by a compulsory one-year rotating internship. Nursing education prepares students to care for patients, assist doctors and handle general hospital responsibilities, while paramedical courses teach practical skills such as first aid and emergency medical support.

AFMC also contributes to postgraduate medical training through the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services, with programmes designed to develop specialised clinical expertise. Super-speciality study is available in fields including cardiology, neurology, nephrology and gastroenterology. The college’s wider academic and research activities include departmental work, continuing medical education, conferences, workshops and health outreach, such as medical camps.
