About Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance
Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance (AFRA) is a registered charity and an Incorporated Society that supports and advocates for the food rescue sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. Their mission is to create a future where no food is wasted and no one who needs food goes without. Established in March 2021 as part of the New Zealand Government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, AFRA has rapidly grown from 17 to 29 member organizations.
AFRA's members, with the help of over 4,000 volunteers, collect, store, and distribute thousands of tons of good quality, nutritious food to over 1,000 recipient organizations across Aotearoa. They work closely with community food donors, such as supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, and local growers, and ensure that edible food that would otherwise go to waste is redirected to those in need, reducing food waste and increasing food security. As a registered charity, AFRA provides national support to local food rescue organizations through collaboration, best practices, capacity building, and advocacy.
Their efforts have resulted in the redistribution of around 10 million kilograms of food, equivalent to over 29 million meals, and a reduction of 20,250 tonnes of CO2 emissions. AFRA values manaakitanga (respect), open communication, and integrity. They strive to support their member organizations and achieve their mission by fostering collaboration and ensuring meaningful impact in their communities
