The African Raptor Centre is a conservation and education organisation based at Tala Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, within reach of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It cares for rescued owls, hawks, eagles and vultures, including more than 100 birds that cannot be released back into the wild. The centre represents over 35 raptor species and works to protect these birds and the ecosystems they help sustain.
Its work brings together four programmes: education, practical research, scientific rehabilitation and specialised breeding. Injured raptors receive specialist assessment, veterinary care and staged recovery, with release pursued where possible. Carefully managed breeding supports genetic diversity and the recovery of threatened species, while field observations, health data and partnerships inform conservation decisions.
Visitors can experience flying displays when conditions allow, interactive vulture feeds and guided enclosure tours. The centre also offers school and group learning visits that introduce people to birds of prey and their habitats. Experiences and schedules depend on weather and bird welfare, so visitors are encouraged to contact the centre before travelling.
