The Afrikaanse Taalraad, also known as the Language Council (ATR), is dedicated to promoting the inclusive and diverse nature of the Afrikaans language within a multilingual context. As per article 185 of the Constitution, it is affiliated with the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities. Serving as a confederate body for autonomous Afrikaans language and cultural organizations, the Taalraad primarily acts as a facilitator, coordinator, empowerer, and network creator in the interest of the entire Afrikaans-speaking community.

The Taalraad actively encourages Afrikaans as a family and community language, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism for children's opportunities, as well as the preservation of Afrikaans as a mother tongue. They also work with religious institutions to better manage language in their communities. Furthermore, the Taalraad promotes Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at all levels, advocating for high-quality Afrikaans language education as a foundation for English-language proficiency.

With a commitment to reconciliation, the Taalraad fosters dialogue among Afrikaans speakers and bridges between communities. They also collaborate with other indigenous languages in the country and have a formal cooperation agreement with the Dutch Language Union. Additionally, the Taalraad coordinates linguistic research efforts to enhance the management of Afrikaans, aiming to establish an Afrikaans Research Institute that conducts regular research and identifies research needs.

As a confederate body, the Taalraad serves as an inclusive voice for the broader Afrikaans community in engagement with governmental authorities. Established in 2008 after a consultative process, the Afrikaanse Taalraad seeks to address divisions among Afrikaans speakers and create new momentum for the Afrikaans language.
