About Afro-Play Oakland
Afro-Play Oakland is a family consulting and resource center, founded by Ellen D. Hamilton and Ajhana DeRamous, with the mission to serve the African Diaspora community in Oakland. The program was initially developed as a 9-week pilot session under the Lotus Bloom Family Resource Center, catering to families in Deep East Oakland.
The success and positive reception led to its continued growth, offering services that focus on culturally responsive ways to ensure equity for Black families and healing around maternal health. Ellen and Ajhana envision expanding Afro-Play into its own Family Resource Center in the heart of Oakland, with a focus on planting seeds of creativity, hope, love, and light into the lives of young Oaklanders. Their future goals include establishing a Black Family Resource Center with a hub in East Oakland, while also offering their services throughout the African Diaspora.
