About Agroecology & Food Sovereignty Alliance
The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) is a farmer-led civil society organization that works towards socially-just and ecologically-sound food and agriculture systems. They aim to foster the democratic participation of Indigenous Peoples, smallholders, and local communities in decision-making processes. AFSA upholds the 7 Pillars of Food Sovereignty, which include valuing food providers, localizing food systems, and putting control locally.
They prioritize community, collaboration, and equality in their work, advocating for practical alternatives such as community-supported agriculture and agroecological farming. AFSA supports local food economies that prioritize producers who work with nature to produce food for people, not profits. They offer various services and programs, including legal advice for smallholders, advocating for legal reform for an agroecological transition, supporting young farmers for land access, promoting agroecology, and advocating for First Peoples' sovereignty.
AFSA is a part of global networks and alliances involved in food sovereignty and food security policy development and advocacy. Their vision is to enable thriving agroecological and regenerative farms, promoting sustainable and ethical food production
