About After School Matters
After School Matters is a Chicago nonprofit that helps teens explore their interests, build practical skills, and prepare for life beyond high school. Founded in 1991, the organization now provides paid after-school and summer opportunities to nearly 20,000 teens each year across more than 350 sites in Chicago. Its programs connect young people with community leaders and mentors, giving them the chance to learn, create, collaborate, and earn money for their participation.
Program areas include performing, visual, and culinary arts; communication and leadership, such as journalism, marketing, and media; sports instruction, stadium management, health, and wellness; and STEM fields, including science, audio/visual, industrial, and information technology. Through these experiences, teens can discover new passions while developing skills for work, college, and their future goals.
After School Matters also supports alumni through a network offering connections, resources, and opportunities. The organization invites individuals and partners to contribute through donations, volunteering, corporate partnerships, and other forms of support. Its TEENMADE shop features creative items made by Chicago teens in its programs.
