About Agrarian Trust
Agrarian Trust is a brand dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by the farming community, including farmland ownership disparities and limited access to land and food. By holding farmland in community-centered commons, Agrarian Trust aims to provide long-term and equitable land access for the next generation of farmers and ranchers. They also empower other models of community land ownership through the Commons Alliance and FaithLands initiatives.
Agrarian Trust was initiated in 2013 by a group of stakeholders in sustainable agriculture who recognized the need for large-scale change in land transfer practices. Inspired by successful French group Terre de Liens and Elinor Ostrom's work on governing the commons, Agrarian Trust is creating legal models to establish a farmland commons that ensures affordable access to ecologically responsible, community-owned food production. By interrupting patterns of consolidation and dispossession, they secure and offer affordable leases to next-generation farmers, fostering regenerative farming practices and community benefit.
