In 1947 Fr Werenfried van Straaten (the bacon Priest) founded Aid to the Church in Need. Today it has 600,000 benefactors in 16 countries. The organisation approves over 8,000 requests for aid annually from Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and the Third World. It has been granted the status of a Universal Public Association by the Holy See. A Catholic Charity dependent on the Holy See, providing pastoral relief to needy and oppressed churches. About Aid To The Church in Need Australia & New Zealand

Aid to the Church in Need is a spiritual and pastoral charity dedicated to keeping the flame of faith alive in places where it is at risk of extinction. Unlike traditional charities, Aid to the Church in Need focuses on providing unique aid projects that support the suffering and persecuted Church. With a history dating back to Christmas 1947, when a young Dutch priest initiated a relief campaign for exiled priests and Catholics in Germany, Aid to the Church in Need has grown into an international Catholic charity.

Today, it operates in nearly 150 countries, supporting over 5,000 Catholic projects with an annual fundraising of more than $150 million. As a Pontifical Foundation, Aid to the Church in Need speaks in the name of the Church and receives no funding from the Church or government. Instead, it relies on the generous offerings of individual Catholics.
