The Aid Worker Security Database (AWSD) is a global compilation of reports on major security incidents affecting aid workers due to deliberate acts of violence. The data includes incidents such as killings, kidnappings, and attacks resulting in serious injury to aid workers worldwide.
Sources for the incident data include public sources, media filtering tools, information directly provided by aid organizations, and collaboration with security consortiums. The database provides detailed information on each incident, including the date, country, location, number of aid workers affected, their affiliation, the type of staff, outcome of the incident, means of violence, and context of the attack.
The database ensures anonymity by not disclosing individual victim names and offers spatial data with the help of organizations like Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN). The AWSD is a project of Humanitarian Outcomes, supported by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, and is intended for research purposes and non-commercial use.
