About Aiken Audubon
The Aiken Audubon Society, established in 1950 and named after naturalist Charles Aiken, is dedicated to the study and conservation of birds and their habitats in the Colorado Springs area. Initially founded as the Aiken Ornithological Society, it became a chapter of the National Audubon Society in 1971. The Society hosts educational programs and events related to birding from September to May, offering free and engaging experiences for nature enthusiasts. These programs typically occur at the Bear Creek Nature Center and include coffee and snacks, fostering community interaction.
Additionally, Aiken Audubon organizes field trips, participates in significant bird counts such as the Christmas Bird Count, and produces a bimonthly newsletter titled "Aikorns." The organization encourages volunteer participation, providing opportunities for community members to engage, learn new skills, and contribute to bird conservation efforts. Aiken Audubon Society remains committed to educating and promoting birding and wildlife conservation while inviting everyone to join and support its initiatives.
