Founded in 2024, AITHYRA seeks to build Europe’s premier institute for AI-driven biological and medical research, uniting computer scientists, engineers, and biologists in a collaborative environment that fuses the mindset and agility of start-ups with the freedom of curiosity-driven academic environment. AITHYRA is a new, dynamic institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, dedicated to advancing a biomedical revolution by connecting cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence with transformative Life Science research. Supported through generous funding from the not-for-profit Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and hosted by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, AITHYRA is building a world-class environment where AI specialists, experimental scientists, and engineers collaborate to push the boundaries of biomedical innovation. In 2025, AITHYRA moved into its first laboratory and office space in the Marxbox at the Vienna BioCenter. In cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency, a new, jointly developed research building will be built by 2029.

AITHYRA is the Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, based in Vienna. Founded in 2024 and supported by a generous donation from the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, the institute brings together expertise from academia, industry, and start-ups to advance biomedical science through artificial intelligence. Its mission is to embed AI in life-science research and help address major scientific challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.
AITHYRA’s research spans AI-driven robotics and scientific discovery, molecular design, protein and enzyme engineering, virology, programmable biology, and cell and tissue biology. Its teams unite computer scientists, biologists, chemists, engineers, and medical doctors, working with international collaborators and global adjunct principal investigators. The institute is building toward 10–14 research groups and state-of-the-art AI-driven laboratories in Vienna.
Alongside its research, AITHYRA develops scientific talent through training and a PhD program, and offers career opportunities through open positions. With an emphasis on open science, integrity, and collaboration, it aims to create an inclusive environment that supports future leaders in AI-driven biomedical research.
