American Jiu Jitsu (AJJ) is a martial arts and self-defense school located at 412 Lake Avenue in St. James, New York. The center teaches a scenario-based approach focused on realistic street situations, helping students respond to encounters involving grabs, weapons, and attackers with or without formal training. Its aim is to develop mind-body unification while making training accessible to beginners and experienced students.
AJJ offers age-specific classes for children ages 4–6, 7–9, and 10–13, as well as teens and adults. Children learn practical self-defense and anti-bullying techniques in a structured setting that supports focus, discipline, confidence, and goal setting. Adult classes combine self-defense training with physical activity and opportunities to progress in the art. The school also provides additional training for military, law-enforcement, and security professionals, drawing on experience teaching at the Pentagon and West Point and working with personnel from several government and public-safety organizations.
American Jiu Jitsu welcomes new students throughout the year and offers a free first class. Classes run Monday through Saturday.
