Ake Ake Shrouds

Ake Ake Shrouds creates artisan funeral shrouds in Kaipara, Northland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Each piece is individually made from natural textiles and hand-dyed with botanicals, combining gentle colours and distinctive plant prints in a dignified, considered design. Described as a soft coffin, a shroud wraps and protects a person after death for burial or cremation. Customers can choose ready-made shrouds through the online store or commission a bespoke design featuring plants with personal meaning, such as those connected to a place or memory.

The shrouds are made with 100% compostable fabrics, threads and plant dyes, and are designed to break down naturally and return carbon to the soil. They meet New Zealand requirements for certified natural burial grounds and are also suitable for lawn cemetery burial and flame cremation; pure silk options can be used for water cremation. Ake Ake also offers guidance through funeral planning, drawing on the maker’s palliative care background, and works with a local craftsperson to provide sustainable timber carrying boards separately.
