About Alana Barrell
Alana Barrell is a multifaceted artist hailing from South Africa, with a diverse upbringing across Canada, Singapore, Ethiopia, and Brunei. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 15, her journey toward recovery has heavily influenced her artistic expression. Now based in Montreal, Alana honed her skills through the CAP program, specializing in sculpture, oil painting, and mixed media.
Her artwork often embodies a unique naïve style, evident in her participation in various group exhibitions and her impactful solo shows, such as "Wild Characters" for the MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADORS series in 2017 and "The Shortest Path" at Usine C in 2018. Alana's work has gained recognition, being featured in notable media outlets like The Montreal Gazette, Global TV, and CBC. Beyond her art, she cherishes her time with her pets—Merlot, Biscuit, and Perla—and enjoys baking and knitting.
