About Alberta Mycological Society
The Alberta Mycological Society, established in 1987 by Prof. Randy Currah and Helene Schalkwijk-Barendsen, is a non-profit organization focused on all things mycological in Alberta. Originally known as the Edmonton Mushroom Club, the society evolved into its current form to accommodate its province-wide influence and activities.
They are actively engaged in studying the diversity and roles of fungi, offering educational programs, organizing seasonal forays, hosting workshops, and celebrating fungi with events like the annual "City of Champignons" expo and gourmet mushroom dinner. Their flagship event, "The Great Alberta Mushroom Foray," held in a different location each year, provides an immersive experience for mushroom enthusiasts. With a dedicated board of volunteers, including President Karen Slevinsky and Treasurer Melanie Fjoser, the society welcomes all to join and explore the fascinating world of fungi in Alberta
