ALCOSAN

ALCOSAN, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority, provides wastewater treatment services to customers across its service area in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Established in 1946, the authority serves 83 municipalities and operates a regional system with 90 miles of sewers and treatment capacity of 295 million gallons of wastewater per day. Its work includes operating and maintaining wastewater facilities, engineering and constructing infrastructure, and monitoring environmental compliance.

ALCOSAN is advancing a 20-year, $2 billion Clean Water Plan designed to reduce wastewater overflows by 7 billion gallons annually. Major initiatives include expanding treatment capacity, developing regional tunnels, improving conveyance infrastructure, and keeping stormwater out of the sewer system through GROW and source-control efforts. The authority also provides customer resources such as bill payment support, service information, overflow alerts, construction updates, and opportunities to engage with public meetings.

Through its Scholastic Outreach Program, ALCOSAN offers educational tours, classroom resources, summer programs, professional development, internships, and other community activities. It also welcomes businesses through bids and supplier programs and hosts a free annual open house.
