Der Verein Alemannia Aachen wurde im Jahre 1900 als „F.C. Alemannia Aachen“ gegründet. Beim Zusammenschluss mit dem Aachener Turnverein 1847 im Jahre 1919 wurde der Name „Aachener Turn- und Sportverein Alemannia“ angenommen, der auch nach der Trennung vom Turnverein im Jahre 1924 beibehalten wurde. Der Profibereich wurde zum 1. Januar 2006 in die Tochtergesellschaft Alemannia Aachen GmbH ausgegliedert. Die Fußball-Jugendmannschaften U17 bis U21 gehören ebenfalls der GmbH an. Die Teams von der U9 bis U16 sowie seit 2009 die Frauenfußballabteilung sind direkt dem Verein unterstellt. Neben Fußball besteht der Verein aus den Abteilungen Leichtathletik (1920 bis 1937 und seit 1956), Handball (1923 bis 1998 und seit 2009), Tischtennis (seit 1949), Volleyball (seit 1960), Futsal (seit 2014) und esports (seit 2019). Ehemalige Abteilungen des ATSV Alemannia umfassen Turnen, Faustball, Wandern, Schwimmen (1920 bis 1939), Hockey (1920 bis 1939), Basketball (1952 bis 1966) sowie Badminton (1956 bis 2009). Zu den größten Erfolgen zählen im Fußball die Vizemeisterschaft 1969 und die UEFA-Cup-Teilnahme 2004/05, im Volleyball die Deutsche Meisterschaft 1961 sowie im Basketball die Deutschen Meisterschaften 1963 und 1964. Der ATSV Alemannia ist der mitgliederstärkste Sportverein in Aachen. Die Mitgliederzahl stieg von 18 im Jahre 1900 über 120 (1905), 900 (1922) und 3.000 (1960) bis auf über 10.000 (2007), aktuell sind es rund 5.800.
