Alex van Stipriaan is a Caribbean history professor, researcher, and cultural heritage specialist whose work explores the histories, cultures, and arts of the Caribbean and its diasporas. His focus includes Suriname, the Dutch Caribbean, the Netherlands, Brazil, and the wider Black Atlantic. He joined Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1986 and became a professor in 1997, retiring in 2021.
He also worked with Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum for ten years, through 2014. Alongside academic research and teaching, van Stipriaan initiates and advises intercultural and heritage projects, including socially engaged work in historical, social, and cultural fields. His website presents an extensive record of these activities, bringing together publications, books and reports, project descriptions, and material on slavery and heritage, Maroon communities, culture and art, heritage and identity, and historiography.
