The Alfie Scholars Program is an initiative at Seattle University that supports underrepresented transfer students pursuing bachelor’s degrees and developing as civility leaders. Its mission combines financial assistance with education in civility, social justice, and constructive engagement with complex social issues. The program aims to help scholars bring their voices and lived experiences into higher education, professional settings, and their communities.
Scholars receive a $15,000 annual scholarship for two years, individual advising and instruction, civility leadership training, and an intensive summer program. Across their junior and senior years, participants also attend summer sessions, five full-day leadership retreats at the start of each academic quarter, and additional events. A dedicated program director and a multidisciplinary team provide guidance and help students navigate university life.
Beyond academic support, the program builds a close-knit cohort community grounded in mutual encouragement, accountability, and a shared commitment to positive social change. The website announces Cohort 9, in 2024, as the program’s final cohort.
