Algae4IBD is an EU-funded research initiative that aims to utilize the power of algae to provide relief for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The project focuses on the untapped potential of cyanobacteria, microalgae, and macroalgae found in oceans, rivers, and lakes, which produce numerous beneficial molecules for health. Over a span of four years, Algae4IBD will study and explore these algae to identify compounds with pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, prebiotic, or antibiotic effects.

The ultimate goal of Algae4IBD is to develop functional food and medication that effectively address the symptoms of pain, inflammation, and an imbalanced gut microbiome associated with IBD. By covering the entire development process from algae cultivation to product formulation, the project ensures efficient and rapid delivery of solutions. Two different routes will be pursued: From nature to plate for dietary products that prevent the onset of IBD, and From nature to bedside for medications that treat IBD symptoms and prevent their recurrence. The process begins by growing the algae in controlled environments known as photo-bioreactors.

The desired compounds are then extracted from the algae cells using techniques such as ultrasound. These compounds are separated and tested individually to determine their effects, including relieving inflammation, acting as prebiotics or antibiotics, and reverting IBD symptoms in pre-clinical trials. The characterization and production of these compounds are carried out to ensure their effectiveness.

The solutions offered by Algae4IBD include algae-powered functional foods and medications. Functional foods have benefits beyond providing nutrients and energy, while food supplements and nutraceuticals provide concentrated sources of health-promoting compounds. Pharmaceuticals, on the other hand, are specifically designed to treat diseases and their symptoms.
