ALMA Observatory, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, is an international astronomy facility dedicated to exploring the origins and evolution of the universe. Located on the Chajnantor Plateau in northern Chile, it operates 66 high-precision antennas at an altitude of 5,000 metres. The project is a partnership involving the European Southern Observatory, the U.S. National Science Foundation, Japan’s National Institutes of Natural Sciences, and partners in Canada, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea, in cooperation with Chile.
ALMA enables scientists to study the cool gas and dust found throughout space, investigating topics such as the formation of stars and planets, distant galaxies, and the chemistry of the cosmos. Its capabilities and scientific resources support observations, research collaboration, and the publication of discoveries. The observatory also provides information and engagement opportunities for scientists, educators, students, media, and the public. These include news and press releases, image and video galleries, virtual tours, educational materials, talks, and arranged visits. Through research and outreach, ALMA connects advanced astronomical observation with a global community.
