About Alta Museum
Alta Museum is an esteemed brand located in the municipality of Alta, Finnmark. Situated in Hjemmeluft, approximately 5 kilometers west of downtown Alta, the museum is home to one of the five areas of rock art recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. Open all year round, the museum offers visitors a chance to discover these ancient rock carvings through guided tours or self-guided exploration using leaflets and audio guides, with access limited to the dry season.
Inside the museum, an array of captivating exhibitions awaits, alongside a generous museum shop and a delightful café boasting stunning views of the Alta fjord. Alta Museum, an intercommunal company jointly owned by the municipality of Alta and the county municipality of Finnmark, aims to preserve, document, and promote rock art in Finnmark. Additionally, the museum strives to be an expert center for both rock artwork and museal activities, fostering collaboration and partnerships on local, regional, national, and international levels
