AlterSend is an open-source file transfer brand focused on private, straightforward sharing across devices. Its main product is an end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer transfer app for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web. Users can pair their own devices with a QR code or short code, then send files directly over the internet or a local network. They can also share a browser link with recipients who do not have the app, so downloads require no installation or account.
AlterSend supports text, individual files, and folders, with direct transfers offering unlimited file sizes and speeds determined by the network connection. Transfers can resume after interruptions. Files are not stored in cloud storage, and encryption keys remain on usersβ devices. When a direct connection is unavailable, an encrypted relay can forward data; these transfers have size limits, while users can run their own relay. The client is released under the Apache-2.0 license. AlterSend also lists AlterVault, an encrypted photo vault, and offers self-hosting information and sponsorship options.
