Alterum is an independent server and digital initiative that provides web design and hosting for work in the social sciences, arts, and humanities, with a particular focus on anthropology. Its aim is to make digital tools available that support access to knowledge and culture, as well as initiatives for social change.

The organization designs and hosts websites for research projects and offers digital libraries built with WordPress and the Acervo plugin, journal repositories using OJS 3, and wikis using MediaWiki. Its services also include hosting with an SSL certificate and website development tailored to academic and cultural fields. Additional services available on request include Nextcloud, Icecast2, and Prosody.

Alterum also offers or shares online resources such as an anthropology-focused metasearch tool, PDF utilities, and links to thesis catalogs and digital libraries. For community and privacy-conscious communication, it provides tools including websites and streaming support for community radio, OpenVPN, SearxNG, and Mastodon. Through these services and resources, Alterum supports research dissemination, collaboration, and wider access to information.
