About Altrusa
Altrusa International is a renowned brand that has been serving communities worldwide since its establishment in 1917. Originally known as Altrusa Institute, the organization was created to meet the growing need for women's civic organizations during World War I. Led by Dr.
Alfred Durham, clubs were organized across Nashville, Louisville, Dayton, and later Indianapolis, where he met Mamie L. Bass. Bass, a prominent figure in the Women's Division of the United States Employment Services, saw an opportunity to elevate the purpose of Altrusa.
In 1918, her vision became a reality at Altrusa's first convention in Indianapolis when the Altrusa Institute transitioned into a classified service organization for women. Over the years, Altrusa International expanded its reach beyond the United States, forming clubs in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chile, Ecuador, India, and many other countries. In 1946, Altrusa made history by sending its first representative to the United Nations, demonstrating its commitment to global impact.
The organization also established the Altrusa International Foundation in 1962, followed by the creation of ASTRA in 1966. With a dedicated board led by President Linda Smith, Altrusa International continues to make a difference in communities worldwide. Through various programs and initiatives, the organization strives to empower women and improve the lives of individuals through service.
Altrusa International is a beacon of hope and change, embodying the spirit of compassion and camaraderie. Visit their nonprofit website to learn more about this remarkable brand and their ongoing efforts to create a better world
