The W. B. Alwood Entomological Society is a Virginia Tech-affiliated organization for students and university community members interested in insects and other arthropods. Founded in 1966, the society is made up mostly of graduate students studying entomology and welcomes other university affiliates with an interest in the subject. Its work centers on outreach and extension, helping the community understand the importance of insects and arthropods through department tours, school visits, and participation in events such as Hokie BugFest. The society reports that its members have reached more than 30,000 children through these activities.
Named for William Bradford Alwood, Virginia Tech’s first entomologist, the society honors a pioneer in horticulture and pest management whose work included more than 60 publications. It also sells insect-themed merchandise, including acrylic keychains, stickers, and long-sleeved T-shirts. Sales support the society’s club activities and a graduate student travel fund. Purchases can be arranged by email, with shipping fees applying to customers outside the Blacksburg area.
