A Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve é uma pessoa coletiva de direito público de natureza associativa e âmbito territorial e visa a realização de interesses comuns aos municípios que a integram, regendo -se pela Lei n.º 75/2013, de 12 de setembro. O âmbito territorial corresponde à NUT II, sendo formada pelos 16 Municípios do Algarve, nomeadamente: Albufeira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, S. Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo e Vila Real de S. António. Constituída a 13 de março de 1992, a Associação de Municípios do Algarve foi transformada em Grande Área Metropolitana do Algarve a 29 de março de 2004, tendo-se convertido na Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve por força da Lei n.º 45/08 de 27 de agosto. Os estatutos foram publicados em Diário da República a 6 de janeiro de 2014 (Aviso n.º 148/2014). A AMAL é composta pelos seguintes órgãos: Assembleia Intermunicipal, Conselho Intermunicipal e o Secretariado Executivo Intermunicipal.
