AMARA

AMARA is a Portuguese nonprofit association dedicated to dignity, meaning and compassionate support throughout life, including at the end of life. Its work helps people face life’s challenges, such as illness, loss, fear and questions about mortality, through attentive, non-judgmental companionship. AMARA trains volunteers to provide existential support to people in their homes or in institutions, and is a training provider certified by DGERT.

Its activities also include courses, workshops, meetings and retreats focused on living with purpose, accepting death and education about death. The association shares resources and publications, and offers opportunities to volunteer, receive support and contribute to its work. AMARA also supports older people by promoting their well-being, dignity and autonomy, strengthening community connections, and helping equip caregivers.

Recognised in 2025 with the BPI Fundação “la Caixa” Seniores Award, the association aims to foster a society that accompanies people with dignity and compassion throughout life and views death as a natural process
