About AMARI-II
AMARI, or the African Mental Health Research Initiative, is a pioneering project aimed at enhancing mental health research capacity and leadership across Africa. Launched in 2015 and funded by the Wellcome Trust, AMARI focuses on creating an Africa-led network of future leaders in mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) research. The initiative is currently in its second phase (AMARI-II, 2023-2027), backed by numerous esteemed institutions, including six African universities and two UK partners.
AMARIβs mission is to drive excellence in research, training, and scientific leadership, specifically targeting the critical treatment gaps in mental health across the continent. Key research areas include the interaction of mental health with HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and serious mental illnesses, with interventions designed to improve adherence to treatment and alleviate caregiver burden. By empowering African scholars, AMARI seeks to reshape the global narrative in mental health, ensuring that African scientists take the lead in advancements and implementation of mental health solutions.
