SMNK Butterflies of the Amazon is a pioneering initiative dedicated to enhancing scientific knowledge and appreciation for Amazonian butterflies. Founded by Dr. Rose Vieira, a Brazilian ecologist with extensive field experience, this platform focuses on documenting and showcasing Brazilian butterfly species and their lush habitats. Operating in conjunction with the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe, Germany, the project aims to spread awareness of biodiversity and contribute to the preservation of these remarkable insects.

The site features a comprehensive field guide that allows users to explore butterfly species through various filters, including color, habitat, and distribution. It encompasses families from the lepidopteran superfamilies Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea, showcasing vibrant images taken in the Amazon rainforest, particularly around Manaus. Each species entry is enriched with biological information based on field observations, aiding in taxonomic identification. Through this educational platform, the SMNK Butterflies of the Amazon seeks to inspire nature enthusiasts and bolster efforts toward environmental conservation.
