About American Museum
The American Museum & Gardens is a unique cultural institution situated in a stunning location. Founded in 1961 by Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn, it is the only museum of its kind outside the United States. The museum's mission is to bring American history and cultures to Britain and Europe, dispelling stereotypes and showcasing American decorative arts.
Inside the Grade I listed building, visitors can explore room sets that transport them to different periods of American history. The museum also houses world-renowned collections of folk art, quilts, and maps. Additionally, the Exhibition Gallery features a shop with unique American products and hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into various aspects of American culture, such as dinosaurs, photography, fashion, history, and music.
Surrounding the museum is a breathtaking Grade II listed garden spread over 125 acres. Designed by the renowned American landscape architectural firm Oehme Van Sweden, the gardens showcase iconic American landscape movements. Highlights of the garden include the New American Garden, a replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon, a dell, an arboretum, and a children's garden.
The American Museum & Gardens also offers educational programs for all ages, guided tours, behind-the-scenes experiences, and a range of activities and crafts for families. There is an on-site deli that serves homemade American-inspired food and beverages, with a terrace offering panoramic views of the Limpley Stoke Valley. Whether you're interested in American history, art, or landscape design, the American Museum & Gardens provides a captivating and immersive experience
