American Rhetoric is an online resource dedicated to the study and appreciation of public speaking and rhetorical practice. Founded in 2001 and produced by Michael E. Eidenmuller, Ph.D., the site brings together speeches and educational materials spanning political, social, religious, legal, sports, and cultural subjects. Its Online Speech Bank indexes more than 5,000 items, including speeches, sermons, lectures, debates, interviews, legal proceedings, and other recorded events, with full-text transcripts and audio or video where available.
The site also features a collection of 100 significant U.S. political speeches selected by leading scholars, as well as more than 275 speeches from Hollywood films. A library of 40 classical rhetorical figures offers examples drawn from speeches, movies, television, lectures, and audiobooks. Visitors can explore speeches by speaker or topic, including dedicated collections on women, U.S. presidents, Christian rhetoric, and September 11. American Rhetoric further supports learning with introductions to rhetoric, scholarly research resources, endnotes, and interactive exercises and quizzes.
