Camell de Molins

Amics del Camell is an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditions of Molins de Rei, Catalonia, through its large, fire-breathing Camell figure and related cultural activities. The zoomorphic beast represents a contraption said to have been devised by local farmers to disrupt a Carnival ball held by the town’s wealthier families. The tradition is documented from the late 18th century, though it may be older; the Camell was revived in 1981.

The organization brings together groups including the Camell’s carriers, fire performers, musicians, and cooks. Its best-known appearance is the Correcuita i Sarau d’Espurnes during the Sant Miquel festival. At Carnival, the Camell features in the Ball del Camell and Empaitaculs, events that culminate in the Samaniat and the burning of the Carnival king. Amics del Camell also organizes activities without fire, school visits, educational resources, and events such as “Desperta el Camell,” “Dona el Xumet al Camell,” and Sant Jordi activities.
