AMCO

The African Marine Conservation Organisation (AMCO) is a Cameroon-based nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding marine and aquatic wildlife and the habitats on which they depend. Through research, conservation, environmental education, and ecotourism, AMCO works along Cameroon’s coastline and in freshwater areas to protect African manatees and other marine megafauna, including dolphins, whales, sea turtles, sharks, and rays. Its programs combine field surveys, species monitoring, citizen science, and community engagement to support practical conservation action.

AMCO also addresses illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, promotes stronger fisheries governance, and delivers environmental education in coastal communities such as Limbe, Nkam, Dizangue, and Kribi. Its community-centered initiatives connect conservation with local livelihoods, including ecotourism opportunities and sustainable income projects for fishers and fish vendors. The organization offers ways for people to contribute through donations, partnerships, volunteering, and internships. It also convenes community, cultural, scientific, and sporting activities, such as Street Manatee, to build awareness and encourage collective action. AMCO reports 11 years of work, six operational sites, and more than 50 university students mentored.
