Ampersand is an African electric-vehicle energy technology company focused on making motorcycle transport cleaner and more affordable. It operates a commercial fleet of electric motorcycles and a battery-swapping network, serving drivers in Rwanda and Kenya. The company says its integrated model can reduce operating costs and help drivers retain more of their income, while cutting carbon emissions and improving air quality.

Ampersand’s system brings together purpose-built electric motorcycles, durable battery packs, swap stations and its AmperOps fleet management software. Drivers can exchange batteries at swap stations, a process designed to be faster and less costly than refuelling. Ampersand reports that its electric motorcycles cost about the same to buy and finance as petrol models, while costing half as much to power.

The company has developed lithium iron phosphate motorcycle batteries and uses predictive AI in AmperOps to help optimise battery lifespan. Battery data is monitored to support durability, reliability and safety. Through its vehicles and energy network, Ampersand aims to help motorcycle drivers increase take-home pay while supporting lower-emission transport.
