ANACS Coin Grading is America's Oldest Grading Service™, with a rich and noble history dating back to 1972. Created by the American Numismatic Association (ANA), ANACS was established to tackle the urgent problem of counterfeit and altered coins in the coin hobby. As a century-old, not-for-profit educational association, the ANA is chartered by the U.
S. Congress and is dedicated to serving collectors of coins, tokens, medals, and paper money. ANACS began its journey with a team of two experts based in Washington D.
C., strategically located near the Smithsonian's Numismatic Collection and the Treasury Department, including the Secret Service. Their mission was to protect the integrity of the coin industry and promote it as a mainstream hobby and business. ANACS quickly grew to become a respected coin grading service by adding more experts to its team.
In 1976, ANACS relocated to Colorado Springs, where the ANA had its headquarters. It was during this time that ANACS started using technical grading standards established by the ANA, as outlined in their book, The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins. With the popularity and trust in ANACS' grading service on the rise, the company began grading thousands of coins monthly.
Instead of encapsulating coins in plastic holders, ANACS initially issued photo certificates showcasing both sides of the coin, grades, and relevant comments. However, in 1989, they shifted to tamper-evident plastic holders for encapsulation. In 2008, ANACS was relocated to Englewood, Colorado, under the ownership of EKW, LLC.
Throughout its journey, ANACS has been led by influential figures in the numismatic community, including Kenneth E. Bressett, who played a vital role as Director of ANACS. Today, ANACS continues to provide expert coin grading services, ensuring the authenticity and quality of coins for collectors and enthusiasts.
With a team of experienced graders, ANACS upholds the highest standards in the industry and offers a range of services, including coin conservation. Their dedication to excellence has made them a trusted name in the numismatic community. To learn more about ANACS and their services, visit their website or contact their customer service team
