About Anderson Center at Tower View
The Anderson Center at Tower View is a historic brand located in Red Wing, Minnesota. Situated on the former estate of Dr. Alexander Pierce (A.
P. ) Anderson and his family, this brand encompasses the Tower View estate, which spans 350 acres and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The estate features exquisite Georgian Revival buildings and a distinctive cylindrical red brick water tower.
The history of the Anderson Center dates back to 1915 when it served as the Anderson family residence, a fully functioning farm, and a research laboratory for the development of breakfast cereals such as Quaker Puffed Wheat and Quaker Puffed Rice. The estate was fully modernized and operated off the grid, supplying its own water and electricity through cutting-edge technologies. Over the years, the Anderson Center has evolved and served various purposes.
It was home to the Anderson Institute for Biological Research, a non-profit scientific organization, during World War II. In the 1940s, it housed Central Research Laboratories, a manufacturer of robotic arms for handling radioactive materials. From 1971 to 1995, it functioned as a rehabilitation center for individuals with physical disabilities.
Since 1995, the Anderson Center has been the steward of this historic site, operating as an artist residency program and art center. Co-founded by Robert and Carolyn Hedin, this non-profit organization supports the creative process by providing residencies for artists and scholars. The Center also offers below-market-rate spaces for local artists and likeminded organizations, fostering a vibrant community of inspiration and support.
In addition to its residency program, the Anderson Center presents a year-round calendar of artistic programs and maintains an 11-acre sculpture garden open to the public.
